John Hedley Brooke is the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion and Director of the Ian Ramsey Centre at the University of Oxford where he is also a fellow of Harris Manchester College. Before moving to Oxford in October 1999 he was Professor of the History of Science at Lancaster University.

A former editor of the British Journal for the History of Science, Brooke has been president of the British Society for the History of Science and of the Historical Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He is currently the director of the European Science Foundation's network on Science and Human Values, and in November 2001 he gave the Distinguished Lecture of the American History of Science Society in Denver. His research interests centre on the use of historical analysis to construct critical perspectives for the discussion of sciences as they bear on religious beliefs and as religious beliefs bear on the sciences.

Professor Brooke's principal publications include: as co-editor with Margaret J. Osler and Jitse M. van de Meer 'Science in Theistic Contexts,' Osiris 16 (2001); Science and Religion: Some Historical Perspectives (1991); and Thinking about Matter: Studies in the History of Chemical Philosophy (1995).
